{Blog Tour, Guest Post, & Giveaway} Worlds Beneath by K.A. Emmons

Happy Saturday, Spirits! Today, I'm delighted to share Worlds Beneath -- a new book from indie author K.A. Emmons!

About the Book

Book Two of The Blood Race Series

I used to think that seeing was believing, but now, as I struggle to stay alive below the ravine, I begin to realize that -- good or bad -- I will see whatever I believe.

"Who are you, Icarus, that the earth opens its mouth to receive your blood?" Sensei's words were my last thoughts before I fell into the bottomless ravine, plunging toward my own death, and bringing about Hawk's at the same time. Or so I thought.

I woke up underwater. I awoke in a strange and unfamiliar world, filled with maze-like forest, shadows, and nightmares seemingly as vivid and dangerous as reality. I had no idea who I was, or how I got there -- I couldn't remember anything, until I remembered her: Hawk. The other half of my soul.

I knew that in order for her to stay alive, I had to survive and find a way out. But that's easier said than done when you're trapped in a realm as deadly as your every thought -- and dominated by a hierarchy of ravenous wolf packs.

Alerted by a dream, I realize that Hawk has left the Dimension to come find me. For an instant, I rediscover hope. But that hope quickly burns to ash when I realize that we may not be the only ones down here. Someone else with a thirst for her blood may have survived the fall too. And I may have just lured her right into the jaws of a predator even fiercer than the wolves.

Guest Post: K.A. Emmons on Writing

I have always said that books are like children; each is different, and each has its own personality. The writing process for me, is a different journey each time and with each new book. Each time I sit down at the desk in the morning with my cup of coffee, I don't have a map or a plan, or a binder full of notes (though there is nothing wrong with that).

I ask to be shown; I ask to be moved and overwhelmed by a story that will change me for the better and make my heart like the moon -- full of craters from meteors, except each meteor is a story.

My sister calls me a pantser. I don't plan much of anything -- in writing or life. I ask to be led. I ask to be guided, and then I wait and see what happens. Because life is exciting, is it not?! Like a good story, it's full of purpose and meaning and twists and turns. It requires that we slow down and savor in order to truly enjoy the journey. And honestly, that's the best word I can think of that embodies the writing process for me:
Journey.
And there is no destination other than truth. And truth is an everyday discovery.

So whether you're a plotter or a pantser, leave room for that discovery. Give yourself permission to loosen your grip. Relax... this is the best part of writing a book -- the journey of actually writing it! Discovering the meaning behind each word, scene, and character. And through this discovery, may you find a beautiful arc that bends towards the truth.

Don't feel the need to take every single piece of advice you receive or have your entire story figured out before you even begin... leave room for adventure, for wonder, and for exploration. Leave room for the truth to be revealed and discovered.

There is no right or wrong to writing: write what's in your heart. Write what you're passionate about. There's a beautiful phrase: raison d'être -- and it means "the most important reason or purpose for someone or something's existence."

I'm a firm believer that each and every one of us have a raison d'être -- we all have a big, beautiful purpose -- a reason we exist. And as creators, everything we create should have a purpose -- a REASON, too. So listen to your heart, listen to that still small voice of truth, and follow it through your story. Let it weave into your prose, and let it infect your characters.

So next time you sit down to write and work through your own process, I hope you find meaning and truth, and purpose and life. And when your readers sit down with your book in their hands?

I hope they find the same thing.

{Cover Reveal} Spicebringer by H.L. Burke

Hello, Spirits! I hope you're off to a lovely Thursday! Today, I'm glad to share the cover for H.L. Burke's upcoming release, Spicebringer...

About the Book

A deadly disease. A vanishing remedy. A breathless journey.

All her life, Niya's known she will die young from the fatal rasp. She survives only with the aid of vitrisar spice and a magical, curmudgeonly fire salamander named Alk. Then an ambitious princess burns down the vitrisar grove in an effort to steal Alk so she can claim her rightful throne. Joined by Jayesh, a disgraced monk, Niya and Alk must flee to the faraway Hidden Temple with the last vitrisar plant, or all who suffer from the rasp will perish.

But even as Niya's frustration and banter with Jayesh deepen to affection, the rasp is stealing away her breath and life.

For a girl with limited time and a crippling quest, love may be more painful than death.

About the Author

Born in a small town in north central Oregon, H.L. Burke spent most of her childhood around trees and farm animals and was always accompanied by a book. Growing up with epic heroes from Middle Earth and Narnia keeping her company, she also became an incurable romantic.

An addictive personality, she jumped from one fandom to another, being at times completely obsessed with various books, movies, or television series (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Star Trek all took their turns), but she has grown to be what she considers a well-rounded connoisseur of geek culture.

Married to her high school crush who is now a US Marine, she has moved multiple times in her adult life but believes that home is wherever her husband, two daughters, and pets are.

{Blog Tour, Guest Post, & Giveaway} Renegade Skyfarer by R.J. Metcalf

Hello, Spirits! Today, I'm thrilled to feature R.J. Metcalf and her debut novel, Renegade Skyfarer!

About the Book

Volume One of the Stones of Terrene Chronicles

The airship crew saved Ben's life from a dragon, of all things.

When Ben wakes up, he has no memory of his family, his home, or how he got to this strange world. All he knows is what his new crew members tell him: the magical Barrier that protects their land is weakening. Unless they find the artifact that can repair it, all of Terrene will be destroyed and enslaved by the enemies beyond.

But when Ben suspects that danger may lurk closer than dragons or sky pirates, he has to decide: stay and fight with the airship crew, or focus on regaining his lost memory? If he leaves, he risks losing his newfound friends -- but if he stays, he might never return home.

Welcome to Terrene -- where dragons exist, the past haunts, and magic is no myth.

Welcome aboard the Sapphire.

Guest Post: R.J. Metcalf on Writing

Oooh, the writing process!

First, you must know that the entire story of the series actually originated with my brilliant husband, Mike. He'd talked about this world and these characters, and how this person would do this or that, and how it'd lead to this occurrence, and so on and so forth. I thought the world sounded amazing, and I wanted to dive into it, but we both thought writing such a thing would be an endeavor for a few decades from now. You know -- when retired, the kids are out of the house, and there's "free time."

Well. I met Jamie Foley online through her beta reading callout, and I'm sure the Lord chuckled at Mike's and my misguided concepts of waiting to write. The moment Jamie sniffed out that we had a story in our heads and hearts, she lovingly pushed as only a Texan can, and urged us to start writing. Now. Today. Ten seconds ago. (If you've never met Jamie, know that she is relentless when she knows something good is up.)

It really didn't take her long to convince us. But then came the difficult question. How to write it? Mike is the idea man. He thinks of all the big pieces that need to fit together, how one event will lead to the next, and making sure there's no plot holes to be found. He forms the skeleton, if you will. For each book, we'll discuss what needs to happen for the plot, what certain characters will or won't be doing, any unknowns (because characters have a mind of their own), and make sure we're on the same page. After we hash all that out, Mike will write a long, multi-page synopsis, then hand it over to me for the actual writing.

I'll take the synopsis and look it over, sometimes rearranging events or point-of-view chapters for better flow of the plot, and then I'll write out a list of chapters based on who's POV, what's happening in the chapter, and what direction it needs to go in. Then comes the pre-writing. Basically, it's an ugly outline for each chapter. It ranges from three to five word non-sentence idea placements, to something as obscure as "Blade haze" or "Jade argh." It's basically for the sole purpose of keeping me on track for what the direction needs to be for that chapter. I'll share all my pre-writes with Mike, so he can point out if I missed something important, or if I'm taking things in the opposite direction than he was envisioning. Which, when you have characters with minds of their own, that happens a bit more frequently than you'd think. *laughs*

Then the fun part: writing.

If I'm home, then I've got my YouTube playlist up and blasting while I have my two desk candles lit, and a hot tea or iced beverage next to me. Possibly an apple with some almonds, or a cookie if I'm being healthy. 😜 Then I sit down, review my pre-write, get the scene firmly in mind, and let my fingers flow over the keyboard. Sometimes I'll review the pre-write and realize that I need a specific emotion for that scene, and I'll spend a few minutes pacing my room, mentally getting in that character's skin, preparing for the emotional onslaught to follow. Chapters like that, I have a little sign I hang on the wall next to me as a warning to not interrupt me while I'm writing, because whatever mood I'm channeling for that chapter, that mood will either overflow onto whomever is asking me for a snack, or it'll pop like a soap bubble and be nigh impossible to just get back into.

After writing comes my review of the chapter, then I'll share it with Mike and maybe my alpha readers. Or I'll wait and send it to my alpha readers once the entire manuscript is done and it's getting sent to my amazing editor at the same time. Depends on my deadline.

And in a not-very-small nutshell, that's my writing process.

Any questions? I'd love to answer more, if desired!

About the Author

During the day, Becky is a stay at home mom of two active little boys. When she has "free time," she enjoys reading, writing, baking, and sewing.

After many years of creative writing classes, writing fanfiction drabbles, and daydreaming, it was high time to start writing her husband Mike's story. She dove into the world of Terrene and hasn't looked back -- except for when she runs out of dark chocolate.

Any free time not spent in Terrene is typically expended on hosting dinner and game nights, running amok with the two little monkeys or watching nerdy movies with Mike.
